'검정치마'라는 밴드 이름은 조휴일이 "단지 어감이 좋아서" 만들었으며, 특별한 의미는 없습니다. 어린 나이 13살 때 가족과 함께 미국으로 이민을 간 조휴일은 미국에서 자랐지만 어릴 적부터 대한민국의 홍대 음악 씬에 큰 관심을 가지고 있었습니다. 검정치마는 2004년 뉴욕에서 시작된 3인조 펑크 록밴드로, 당시에는 조휴일을 포함한 다른 두 명의 음악가들과 함께 활동하였으며, 지금까지 많은 멤버 교체를 겪었습니다. 그는 미국 버클리 음대를 중퇴하고, 'Castel Prayon'이란 이름으로도 활동했습니다. 또한 애리조나, 인디애나, 뉴욕, 뉴저지 등 미국의 여러 도시에서 외국인 친구들과 밴드 활동을 전전하며 음악을 했습니다. 어느 날, 2007년 한국에서 큰 꿈을 품고 '쌈지사운드페스티벌'의 '숨은 고수'에 지원했지만, 아쉽게도 마지막 관문에서 탈락하였습니다. 그는 나중에 인터뷰에서 "사실 2007년 한국에서 실패한 후에는 매우 억울했습니다. 그래서 앨범이라도 남기자는 마음으로 미국 현지 친구들의 도움으로 음반을 제작하여 국내에 출시했고, 다행히도 좋은 반응을 얻게 되었습니다."라고 회고했습니다. 루비살롱이 인디 레이블로 조휴일을 발견하여, 그는 미국으로 돌아와 제작한 앨범 '201'을 2008년에 국내에서 발매하였습니다. 이 앨범은 큰 인기를 얻어 한국 인디 홍대 씬에서 공식적으로 활동을 시작하게 되었습니다.

The Black Skirts, a three-member punk rock band centered around Jo Hyu-il, started in New York in 2004. At that time, Jo Hyu-il was joined by two other musicians, and the band has undergone several member changes since then. The name "The Black Skirts" was chosen by Jo Hyu-il simply because it sounded good, without any special meaning. Although Jo Hyu-il immigrated to the United States with his family at the young age of 13 and grew up there, he had a great interest in the Hongdae music scene in South Korea since he was young.

The Black Skirts, formed in 2004 in New York, is a three-member punk rock band. Initially consisting of Jo Hyu-il and two other musicians, the band has experienced numerous member changes over the years. Jo Hyu-il, who grew up in the United States after immigrating at the age of 13, always had a strong fascination with the vibrant music scene in Hongdae, South Korea. He attended Berklee College of Music but dropped out, also pursuing music under the name "Castel Prayon." During his time in the United States, he traveled between various cities such as Arizona, Indiana, New York, and New Jersey, collaborating with foreign friends in bands.

One day, in 2007, Jo Hyu-il decided to pursue his dreams in South Korea and participated in the "Hidden Master" competition of the Ssamzie Sound Festival. Regrettably, he was ousted in the ultimate round. Reflecting on that experience in a later interview, he expressed, "To be honest, I felt very frustrated after failing in South Korea in 2007. So, with the intention of at least releasing an album, I worked with the help of my friends in the United States and released a record in the domestic market, fortunately receiving a positive response."

It was during this time that the indie label Ruby Salon discovered him, leading to the release of his album '201' in the following year, 2008. The album gained significant popularity, marking the official start of his activities in the Korean indie scene in Hongdae.
