Kim Choo Ja is a South Korean singer who was born on January 2, 1951, in Hyoja-dong, Chuncheon City, Gangwon Province. After graduating from Chuncheon Girls' High School, she was active as a badminton and gymnastics athlete in Gangwon Province while serving as the cheerleading captain during high school. She won third place at the Chuncheon Hometown Festival for singing the traditional folk song "Sushimga."

In 1969, she enrolled in the Theater and Film Department at Dongguk University and earned a bachelor's degree in 1973. She made her debut as a singer thanks to Shin Joong-hyun's recommendation, who praised her vocal skills and sexy dance moves while pursuing Korean rock music in the 1970s. She became very popular in South Korea during this time, and the catchphrase "Cigarettes are blue and songs are Choo Ja" even emerged. However, after the announcement of Emergency Measure No. 9 in April 1975, all of her songs were classified as banned songs, and she was sentenced to a complete ban on her singing activities. This prevented her from working with other artists such as Lee Jang-hee, Shin Joong-hyun, and Yoon Hyung-ju, among others. The reason was due to the possession of marijuana, which was prevalent among singers at that time. She made several attempts to make a comeback but failed and left the music industry after getting married in 1981. However, she made a comeback in 1988 with the release of "Time Flies," resuming her career as a singer.

Most of Kim Choo Ja's music was composed by Shin Joong-hyun, and her music was a Korean rock style with added Korean elements to modern music. For example, the singing style of pansori was sometimes introduced at the end of her songs before she became famous. This music style was very innovative compared to the popular trot music of the time, and Kim Choo Ja's music provided a new experience for many people. Her music combined traditional Korean music with Western music elements, which was a very innovative attempt in the Korean music industry at that time.
