김현철님은 어렸을 적부터 초등학교 2학년부터 6학년까지 사우디아라비아에서 보내며 다양한 문화와 경험을 쌓으셨습니다. 그 후 1989년 첫 앨범 수록곡인 《춘천 가는 기차》, 1993년 3집 수록곡 《달의 몰락》 등을 발표하며 고급스러운 음악을 선보이며 주목을 받았습니다. 이후 꾸준한 히트곡 발표로 인기를 끌며, 1980년대 후반부터 1990년대를 풍미한 동아기획에서 활동했던 뮤지션들 중에서도 대표적인 가수로 손꼽히며 다른 많은 가수들에게도 직간접적으로 큰 영향을 주었습니다.

또한, 이소라 등의 음반을 프로듀싱하여 히트시키는 등 제작자로서의 역량도 인정받으며 활동하셨습니다. 현재는 경희대학교 포스트모던음악학과 교수로서 학생들의 음악 교육에도 많은 노력을 기울이고 계십니다.

김현철님은 서울청담초등학교와 언북중학교, 영동고등학교를 졸업하시고, 홍익대학교 전기제어공학과를 졸업하셨습니다.

또한, 김현철님은 2007년부터 1년간, 2013년부터 2018년까지 MBC FM4U의 《오후의 발견》을 진행하며 청취자들과 소통하셨습니다. 이후 6개월 만에 동 채널로 복귀하여 피아니스트 이루마의 후임으로 《FM 골든디스크》를 진행하다가 2022년 3월 27일 종영되었습니다. 현재는 MBC 표준FM의《원더풀 라디오》를 진행하시면서 매주 다양한 음악과 이야기를 전달하고 계십니다. 또한, 김현철님은 경희대학교 포스트모던음악학과 교수로 재직하시면서 학생들에게 음악 교육을 전달하고 계시며, FE 엔터테인먼트의 대표로서 연예인 기획사의 경영도 맡고 계십니다. 김현철님은 뛰어난 음악적 재능과 지혜로 수많은 가수들과 음악 팬들에게 사랑받고 있으며, 대중 음악의 발전과 함께 많은 이들에게 영감을 주고 계십니다.
