김상민은 대한민국의 대표적인 록 가수 중 한 명으로, 1992년 언더그라운드 라이브 클럽에서 록 음악 가수로 데뷔했습니다. 그 이후 1998년 인하대학교 교내 가요제에서 대상을 수상하며 대중들의 관심을 받았고, 0.5집 〈Memorability〉로 데뷔 전 홍보용 음반을 발표했습니다.
1999년에는 1집 앨범 〈Until...(하늘이 도우사)〉로 본격적으로 데뷔하여, 김상민의 특유의 감성적이고 진솔한 보컬로 인기를 얻었습니다. 이후 2001년에 발표한 2집 앨범 〈Face〉는 대중들에게 더욱 널리 알려졌으며, 연이어 발표한 3집 앨범 〈Message〉도 호평을 받았습니다.
다양한 TV 프로그램에 출연하여 활발하게 활동하였습니다. 그리고 한국 가수로는 이례적으로 터키에 진출하기도 하였으며, MBC 드라마 《다모》의 O.S.T에도 참여하였습니다. 대표곡으로는 《You》와 《숙명》이 있으며, 2014년에는 싱글앨범 《가슴을 채운다》를 발표하였고, 2014년 10월 28일에는 싱글앨범 《부탁해요》를 발표하였습니다. 또한, 2016년 11월 29일에는 싱글앨범 《그 거짓말》을 발표하여 음악적으로도 꾸준히 활동하고 있습니다.
현재 김상민은 경민대학교 실용음악과 교수로 재직하고 있으며, 교육적인 면에서도 음악계에 많은 기여를 하고 있습니다. 이처럼 김상민은 그의 감성적이고 짙은 음악색으로 대중들의 마음을 사로잡았을 뿐만 아니라, 음악교육에도 큰 관심을 가지고 있습니다. 교수로서의 경력을 바탕으로, 학생들에게 음악의 기본기부터 고급 기술까지 다양한 수업을 진행하고 있습니다.
