레서판다(학명: Ailurus fulgens)는 식육목 레서판다과에 속하는 포유류로, 동물계에서의 위치는 척삭동물문에 속합니다. 이 동물은 작은 판다로 불리며, 영어로는 주로 Red panda로 불립니다. 그러나 가끔 "작은 판다"의 의미에서 "레서 판다"라는 표현을 사용하기도 합니다. 이 동물은 주로 히말라야 산맥과 중국의 쓰촨성의 산림지대 등 고지역에서 서식하며, 추운 기후에 적응한 동물입니다.

레서판다의 생김새는 성장했을 경우에 약 50~65cm까지 자라며, 꼬리도 길어서 30~60cm까지 성장합니다. 몸무게는 3~7kg 정도로 나타납니다. 이 동물은 검은 색과 짙은 적갈색으로 된 털을 가지고 있으며, 얼굴과 귀는 하얀색 바탕에 검은색 털이 섞여 있습니다. 또한 발가락의 수는 다섯 개이며, 특이하게도 손목뼈가 돌출되어 있는 일종의 가짜 엄지발가락을 가지고 있습니다.

성격적으로는 일반적으로는 온순한 편이라고 알려져 있지만, 최근 연구에 따르면 크게 성격이 다르다는 주장도 있습니다. 일본에서는 레서판다와의 생활을 다룬 방송을 통해 장난기 넘치는 모습도 보여주었지만, 실제로는 예민하고 까다로운 성격을 가진 동물로 알려져 있습니다. 사육사의 경험에 따르면 크게 성격이 다양하며, 사람을 경계하는 경향이 있습니다.

식성은 잡식성으로 대나무뿐만 아니라 곤충, 새의 알, 과일 등 다양한 것을 먹습니다. 야생에서는 대부분 대나무를 주식으로 삼지만, 동물원에서는 과일을 주로 먹는 경우가 많습니다. 수명은 자연상태에서는 8년에서 10년 정도이지만, 동물원에서 잘 관리되어 25년까지 살아낸 사례도 있습니다.

레서판다는 현재 멸종 위기 종으로 등급이 지정되어 있으며, 서식지 파괴 및 사냥 등으로 인해 개체 수가 감소하고 있습니다. 따라서 보호에 필요한 노력이 요구되고 있습니다. 현재 서울 동물원과 에버랜드를 비롯한 여러 동물원에서도 레서판다를 관람할 수 있으며, 해외에서도 일부 동물원에서 관리되고 있습니다. 이 동물에 대한 연구와 보호 활동이 더욱 확대되어야 할 시점에 있습니다.
