AC/DC is an Australian rock band formed in 1973 by the Malcolm brothers and Angus Young. They are variously described as hard rock, blues rock, and heavy metal, but they simply refer to it as "rock and roll."

AC/DC had several changes to its members' composition before releasing its first album, "High Voltage", in 1975. The stable lineup consisted of the Angus and Malcolm brothers, guitarist, and vocalist Von Scott, drummer Phil Rudd, and bassist Mark Evans. However, Evans was fired from the band in 1977, and after the 1978 album "Powerage", Cliff Williams was the bassist. In February 1980, seven months after releasing the landmark album "Highway to Hell," Scott died of alcoholism. AC/DC considered breaking up the band, but at Scott's family's request, the remaining members decided to keep the band, bringing in Brian Johnson as the new vocalist. Later that year, the band released "Back in Black" in memory of Scott with Johnson, which led to AC/DC's success and became one of the best-selling albums of all time.

The band's eighth studio album, "For That About to Rock We Salute You" (1981), was the first number one album in the United States. Prior to the subsequent release of "Flick of the Switch" (1983), Rudd left the band and was replaced by Simon Wright, with Chris Slade joining as drummer in 1989.
