1962년 6월 6일부터 1987년 11월 1일까지, 유재하는 한국의 싱어송라이터로 활동하였습니다.
유재하는 어릴 적부터 음악에 능통했으며, 중학교 시절부터 어니언스의 노래를 부르며 기타를 연주하기 시작했습니다. 고등학교 졸업 후 한양대학교 음악대학 작곡과에 진학하였으며, 여러 악기의 연주에도 능통했습니다. 1982년에는 '조용필과 위대한 탄생'의 키보디스트로 활동하였으나, 학교의 허가를 받지 못해 탈퇴하게 되었습니다. 이후에는 김현식의 밴드인 봄여름가을겨울에서 객원 멤버로 활동하였으며, 김현식의 명반에도 일조하였습니다. 하지만 밴드 멤버와 음악적 지향점이 달라 6개월의 밴드 활동을 접게 되었습니다. 마지막으로 1986년에는 베이시스트 조원익과 함께 음반을 준비하던 중 교통사고로 인해 사망하였습니다.

 

전 곡 모두 유재하 본인이 직접 작사/작곡/편곡을 담당했다. 유재하는 가수 데뷔 이전부터 다양한 뮤지션들의 세션으로 활동했기 때문에, 세션 시절 타 뮤지션에게 제공했던 곡을 본인의 창법과 음색에 맞게 셀프 리메이크하기도 했다. 이문세에게 제공했던 '그대 내 품에', 위대한 탄생 활동 시절 조용필에게 제공했던 '사랑하기 때문에', 그리고 김현식과 봄여름가을겨울 활동 시절 김현식에게 제공한 '가리워진 길' 세 곡이 그것이다.

 

KBS 젊음의 행진에서 처음으로 가수로 출연하신 모습이 담긴 '내 마음에 비친 내 모습'은 1집 앨범 수록곡 중 하나입니다. 유재하씨는 이 방송에 꼭 출연하고 싶어했었는데, 알고 지내던 한영애씨에게 "누나, 나 방송 나가!"라고 자랑했다고 합니다.

1987년 10월 31일 저녁, 유재하씨는 동창회에 가려다가 갑자기 나섰습니다. 그리고 다음 날인 11월 1일 새벽, 취한 친구가 몰던 차와 충돌해 생을 마감하셨습니다. 유재하씨는 사후에 경기도 용인군 모현면(현 용인시 처인구 모현읍) 오산리 천주교 용인공원묘원에 안장되셨습니다. 유재하씨가 마지막으로 만난 사람에 의하면, 1집의 완성도에 아쉬워하셨고, 만약 2집을 발매할 수 있다면 더 좋은 앨범으로 만들겠다는 강한 의지를 가지고 있었다고 합니다.

 

유재하는 세상을 떠날 때, 하나의 음반을 남기고 가셨지만, 그의 작품은 그 당시 뿐만 아니라 지금도 대단한 영향력을 끼치며 대한민국 대중음악계의 위대한 유산 중 하나로 자리매김하고 있습니다. 아들의 음악적 업적을 기리기 위해 설립된 유재하 음악장학회는 음반 수익과 성금을 기탁하여 매년 유재하 음악경연대회를 개최하고, 조규찬을 비롯한 유희열, 고찬용, 김연우, 나원주, 정지찬 등 대한민국 대중음악계를 대표하는 인재들을 발굴하였습니다.

오랜 기간 동안 한국 대중음악계를 빛나게 했던 유재하의 [사랑하기 때문에]는, 그가 단 한 장의 앨범으로 남긴 작품 중 하나입니다. 유재하씨는 앨범의 모든 곡을 혼자 작사, 작곡, 편곡하며 노래도 부르는 등, 자신만의 노력과 열정으로 이룩한 성과입니다. 그의 음악은 클래식과 팝, 락 등을 접목시켜 새로운 한국형 발라드의 길을 제시했으며, "사랑하기 때문에", "가리워진 길" 등 유재하씨의 대표적인 곡들도 이 앨범에서 새롭게 태어난 셈입니다. 하지만 불공정한 평론가와 대중들의 평가로 인해 발매 당시에는 많은 사람들의 관심을 받지 못했으나, 그가 세상을 떠나고나서야 그의 음악은 재평가를 받게 되었고, 대중들의 마음을 사로잡게 되었습니다.

 

Yu Jae-ha's [Because I Love You] is one of the masterpieces he left behind, shining in the Korean pop music scene for a long time. He single-handedly composed, wrote lyrics, arranged, and sang every song on the album, achieving this feat through his own efforts and passion. His music blended classical, pop, and rock elements to introduce a new path for Korean ballads, and iconic songs like "Because I Love You" and "The Hidden Road" were born anew on this album. However, unfair evaluations from critics and the public prevented it from receiving much attention at the time of its release. It was only after he passed away that his music was re-evaluated and captured the hearts of the public.

From June 6, 1962 to November 1, 1987, Yoo Jae-ha was a Korean singer-songwriter.
Yoo Jae-ha was proficient in music from an early age, and began playing the guitar while singing Announce's songs from middle school. After graduating from high school, I went to Hanyang University's College of Music and was good at playing various musical instruments. In 1982, he worked as a keyboardist for "Cho Yong-pil and the Great Birth," but he withdrew because he did not get permission from the school. Later, he worked as a guest member of Kim Hyun-sik's band, Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, and also contributed to Kim Hyun-sik's masterpiece. However, I quit my band activities for 6 months because my musical orientation is different from that of the band members. Finally, in 1986, he died in a car accident while preparing an album with bassist Cho Won-ik.

Yoo Jae-ha himself wrote, composed, and arranged all the songs. Since Yoo Jae-ha has been active in sessions with various musicians since her debut as a singer, she also self-remade songs that she provided to other musicians during the session to suit her singing style and tone. There are three songs, "In Your Arms" provided to Lee Moon-se, "Because I Love You" provided to Cho Yong-pil during his great birth activities, and "Covered Road" provided to Kim Hyun-sik during his spring, summer, fall and winter activities.

My reflection in my heart, which shows you appearing as a singer for the first time at KBS Youth March, is one of the songs in the first album. Yoo Jae-ha really wanted to appear on the show, but she bragged to Han Young-ae, who she knew, "Sister, I'm going on the show!"

On the evening of October 31, 1987, Yoo Jae-ha was about to go to a reunion, but suddenly came out. And the next day, at dawn on November 1st, he crashed into a car driven by a drunk friend and died. Yoo Jae-ha was buried in the Catholic Yongin Park Cemetery in Osan-ri, Mohyeon-myeon, Yongin-gun, Gyeonggi-do (currently Mohyeon-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin-si). According to the last person Yoo Jae-ha met, he was disappointed with the completeness of his first album and had a strong will to make it a better album if he could release his second album.

Yoo Jae-ha left behind an album when he passed away, but his work has become one of the great legacies of the Korean pop music scene, having a great influence not only then but also now. Founded to commemorate his son's musical achievements, the Yoo Jae-ha Music Scholarship Association holds an annual Yoo Jae-ha music contest by donating album profits and donations, and discovered talented people representing the Korean pop music industry, including Cho Kyu-chan, Ko Chan-yong, Kim Yeon-woo, Na Won-ju, and Jung-chan.
