Cook Da Books is an English new wave band formed in 1980 with musicians from Lubberpool. The band is also known as Cook da Books, Cook the Books, Big in France, and Da Books. They worked with indie labels and released politically sensitive music. However, they also contributed to popular movie music. The band released two albums and eleven singles before disbanding in 1988.
Cook Da Books was composed of former members of The Dogems and Brooklyn, Lubberpool's pub/cabaret circuit group. They were not associated with the local punk and new wave scene, but they were accomplished musicians with close harmonies gained from the days of the Hilda Fallon Roadshow.
They received attention with their politically controversial debut single, "Piggie in the Middle 8." The song contained provocative lyrics about Tox's riots. The band's manager played the demo to famed reggae producer Dennis Bobell, who agreed to record the song at Studio80 in London. Later, a deal with Probe Records was struck, bringing the record to independent markets. It was the first record to be released on the Probe label, which has since led to the success of many artists.
Their songs included three songs in the soundtrack of the film La Boum 2. Specifically, "Your Eyes," performed by the band, became a hit in Europe, Hong Kong, and the Philippines, earning the band a gold album. It earned the band international recognition, but remained relatively unknown in their home countries, the U.K. and the U.S.
Cook Da Books continued to perform live until it disbanded in 1988, bringing the manual to the stage in the U.K. and the U.S. They secured recording and rehearsal space in the center of Liverpool during their contract with Virgin Records, but after the deal was broken, they transferred it to other Liverpool bands such as Echo & the Bunnymen.
Cook Da Books eventually signed with 10 Records, which is part of Virgin Records, but was free to run its own label, Kitteland Records, with demo recordings. In 1985, it sang "Spartakus," composed by Cosma, for the soundtrack to the French science and detective animated TV show Les Monds Engloutis.
They recorded a cover song of Stevie Wonder called "Living for the City" and later recorded "The Lookout Is Out" with new lyrics, which was used as the theme song for the 1986 animated film Asterix in Britain.
Peter "Digsy" Deary later led Smaller, played by his brother Stephen, who played the drums. The band released UK hit singles "Wasted" and "Is" in 1996 and 1997, marking Oasis' debut
It was also mentioned on the track "Digsy's Dinner" on the album Definitely Maybe. Oasis' Noel Gallagher was also a guest on Smoller's 1997 album Badly Badly.
In 2012, Dixie and Owen became the subject of the documentary We Want to Knock It, created by Reliever Filmmakers Daniel Draper and Frankie Cowley.
