김은숙 작가와 이응복 감독이 합작한 이 작품은 이들의 세 번째 협업으로, 이전에는 《태양의 후예》(2016년), 《도깨비》(2016년) 등으로 화제를 모았습니다. 하지만 《미스터 션샤인》은 당초 SBS에서 방송될 예정이었으나 막대한 제작비 문제와 주연배우 이병헌과 SBS 드라마본부 측의 적대적인 관계로 인해 SBS에서의 방영이 불발되었습니다. 또한, 이 작품은 친일 미화와 역사 왜곡 등의 논란을 일으키기도 했습니다.

"Mr. Sunshine" is a weekend drama that aired from July 7, 2018 to Sept. 30, 2018 on tvN, and tells the story of a righteous 兵 during the Korean Empire from 1900 to 1907. The drama was filmed at Sunshine Studio in Yeonmu-eup, Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, and the title "Mr. Sunshine" is written as "Shine" rather than "Sunshine" according to the notation of the time in 1900.

Co-produced by Kim Eun-sook and director Lee Eung-bok, it was their third collaboration, previously drawing attention with Descendants of the Sun (2016) and Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016). However, "Mr. Sunshine" was originally scheduled to air on SBS, but it was canceled due to huge production costs and the hostile relationship between leading actor Lee Byung-hun and SBS's drama division. It also caused controversy over pro-Japanese beautification and historical distortion.

The plot of the drama tells the story of Eugene, a slave boy from Joseon, who boarded a U.S. warship and crossed into the U.S., returned to Joseon as a U.S. Marine officer, and made love with the noble family. The main characters include Lee Byung-hun, Kim Tae-ri, Yoo Yeon-seok, Kim Min-jeong, and Byun Yo-han.

The special "Gun, Glory, Sadending" aired on September 22, 2018, with a reimagined version of episodes 1 through 22. The special included highlights, unreleased episodes, and previews for episodes 23-24.

"Mr. Sunshine" was loved by many viewers for its underlying historical background, complex character settings, and outstanding acting and emotional lines. In particular, the performances of Lee Byung-hun and other leading actors received high praise, as did the storytelling by Kim Eun-sook and the directing by Lee Eung-bok.
