박기영은 어린 시절부터 음악에 뛰어난 재능을 보였으며, 피아노로 여러 차례의 전국대회에서 수상한 경험이 있습니다. 중학교 시절에는 밴드에 처음 합류하였고, 대학 시절에도 밴드에서 활동했습니다. 1994년 KBS 라디오 《가위바위보》 애청자 콘테스트에서 1등을 차지하게 되면서 가수의 길을 걸어왔는데, 이때 김철 프로듀서를 만나게 되어 더 큰 무대에 발을 들이게 되었습니다.

이후 서울예술대학 실용음악과를 졸업하고 1997년 첫 음반 《One》으로 가요계에 정식 데뷔하였습니다. 그 뒤로 박기영은 자작곡을 부르며 싱어송라이터로서의 활동을 시작하였습니다. 두 번째 음반 《Promise》는 , 으로 히트하며 큰 인기를 얻었고, 이후 음반에서는 작사, 작곡, 편곡, 프로듀싱까지 다방면으로 참여하여 자신만의 음악적 스타일을 구축했습니다.
